“We deliver on our commitments” An open letter from Kokes Properties President Michael J Kokes.

A few months ago, we did a complete refresh of my company, rebranding from Homestake Capital to Kokes Properties. During this process, I was forced to develop an updated mission statement and our main messaging. Things that we already did, our culture, I had to put into words so that we could use them for sales, marketing, and general employee training. It took two months to craft 254 words, but each word was meticulously chosen and strung together. A lot went into this process for I knew that one day they might be tested. In January our website went live, and these words were put on display for everyone to see.

When times are good it is easy to do what is right. Money is flowing and people are happy. Conversely, when times get tough people make extremely difficult decisions based upon what they think is the right path. Sometimes, these decisions come at a price to others. Everyone is presented a different set of circumstances and I won’t judge other’s decision making. That being said, I took a moment during this difficult time to reexamine those words I put out there and see how they are the holding up in the current context of the global pandemic.

Starting with my Grandfather in 1964, our family business has survived 6 economic recessions, adapting to the ever-changing business environment. With the impact of Novel Coronavirus, it appears we will yet again face another recession or at the very least some economic downturn. Not unlike other recessions, this one will greatly impact the real estate industry and business landscape. Adhering to our financial and business principals, we are prepared to weather any impending storm. Adopting technology and work from home techniques early on, as well as maintaining a healthy balance sheet, I am confident in our ability to deliver on the commitments we have made.

A core message of Kokes Properties is honoring the commitments we make, by doing what is right, so that we can ensure long lasting relationships and thriving projects. As the owner of Kokes Properties, I am 100% committed to stand behind this principal set before me by previous generations. I have made commitments to our customers, employees, financial partners, trade partners, and government officials, and I will honor each one of those commitments made during this difficult time. In a time of extreme uncertainty, I strive to provide assurance in our actions by doing what is right.

The evolution from today until the new normal will take time, but we will adapt to the ever-changing business environment before us, adhering to the principals we have developed over the years. Again, honoring the commitments we made to those we work with. It brings me much joy when I receive a “thank you” call from a vendor for prompt payment or an email from a Mayor saying how happy they are of the project we built. Being a multigenerational builder, reputation is everything, and I look forward to carrying that good reputation though my career.
